PRINCESS AZIZA

AZIZA

Princess Aziza (Leslie Iniguez) has been performing as a Middle Eastern bellydance artist for over 15 years. She began taking lessons from Jodette, who gave her the foundation of her dance style and encouraged her to perform professionally. Since then, she has taken many workshops with other well-known instructors over the years; all of these artists have helped to define the style of Princess Aziza today.

Princess Aziza has danced for numerous ethnic restaurants in the greater Sacramento and Bay Area; and at private parties, which include everything from birthdays and retirement parties, to live music for Middle Eastern groups; as well as at parties and wedding receptions. In addition, she has performed at the California State Fair, Placer County Fair, and other local and regional fairs, parades and festivals. She was featured in the local media scene, including an article in the Sacramento Bee’s Neighbors section, the Sacramento Union newspaper and a Channel 31 evening news segment. Princes Aziza currently performs at two restaurants in Sacramento: Casablanca and Cafe Morocco.

Princess Aziza: “My favorite style of Middle Eastern dance is “Raqs Sharqi.” I love the music, the costumes and the drama of this style of dance. I am not a huge fan of choreography, but I realize its place in certain areas of the dance, and as a tool in teaching movements to others. For performing, I prefer an improvisational approach, as I can better express my emotions to the audience without the constraints of having to do step A, B or C during a certain part of the music. I will, however, loosely choreograph drum solos and other intricate musical scores. This way, I am always prepared for each subtle nuance of the music, which Egyptian style music is full of.”

Princess Aziza will be teaching a workhop at Jodette’s Homeless Benefit Show in November. The class will focus on various hipwork techniques and movements common to Egyptian style (Raqs Sharqi) dance.
