BELLY LAUGHS IN PAPERBACK
He promised to make her a star -- Egyptwood style. More than a ring made the promise -- he adorned her with jewels!
"Because I live in the USA now, some people think I have taken an American name. But my name has always been Jodette. I was named in Jaffa, which was in Palestine. My mother had wanted a boy. She was so disappointed that I was a girl, she did not even name me until I was two weeks old! Because she was well connected in politics, many people came to visit, including the Ambassador of France. When he discovered that I had no name, the Ambassador suggested to name me 'Jodette.'" In France, this name is pronounced "zshodette," with a soft j-sound as in 'Zsa Zsa' Gabor. |
THE TOAD
HER LIFE STORY READS LIKE AN IRWIN SHAW novel. Born in Jaffa under the backdrop of a revolution, an earthquake struck the moment she made her entrance. Jodette was considered a lucky baby -- her mother's placenta, despite the earth's rumblings, emerged perfectly intact.

"In a passenger plane at 30,000 feet. I had hidden an 8-foot snake in a basket, but it escaped. The captain even came out looking for it. There was a pandemonium. For my apology, I danced. Everybody became happy and I think TWA sold quite a lot of liquor that night!"
--Jodette
"In my early days, I did a bellygram in a meat packing freezer."
--Tamalyn Dallal
"Once I was asked to dance for a woman in a coma. They told me my performance was (and this is the truth!) "stirring."
--Romnea
JOPLIN'S EYELASH
AMONG THE PERKS OF LIVING IN AMERICA IN the sixties were the generous quantities of beads and fringe -- what more could a bellydancer want?
"I made my own clothes," enthuses Jodette in her lilting, musical accent, "One of my favorites was a fabric called "eyeLASH." It's a type of rainbow material, you can see it on the "Rolling Stone" magazine." We can?
"Yes, I make one rainbow eyeLASH outfit for Janis Joplin and she wear it when they take her picture for the cover of "Rolling Stone."
Janis not only enjoyed Jodette's undulations, she really liked her outfits. In conversation she found out that Jodette made clothes.
"She loved what I had on because it was groovy and mod," Jodette recalls.
And Janis wasn't the only one who hired Jodette to make outfits.
"I made a few shirts for Jimi Hendrix. He would always put it on and parade back and forth onstage," she remembers. And he always said 'Thanks!'"
Jodette and her mother moved to Sacramento, where they lived together. As were the times, furniture was minimal. People just came to other people's homes and became part of the floor. Sometimes without the benefit of something to smoke.
Janis Joplin had stopped by one afternoon to look at some patterns for a pair of bellbottoms. As was the style, the pants had cuffs that could float a family of three to Alcatraz Island.
"Janis came into the living room, sat on the floor, rolled a joint, and had a cup of Turkish coffee," Jodette remembers.
Jodette mentioned that her mother could look into the bottom of an empty cup and tell the future.
Intrigued, Janis quickly finished her coffee and Jodette's mother cast her third eye into the abyss of the cup bottom. Moments later, she turned away as if she'd seen a ghost.
In Arabic, she murmured to Jodette that Janis Joplin's life was going to be a short one.
"Well, what's my future look like?" Janis was anxious.
"Your life will be beautiful...like a flower," Jodette's mother said with a sad smile. "Like a flower." (Maybe because flowers have short lives?)
Six months later, Janis Joplin was dead.
